2019 GMBC SeaWind Sailing Championships - Round 5
The fifth round of the GMBC Championship for SeaWinds took place at Emmarentia Dam on Sunday 26 May. Despite the forecast for very light winds, we had some nice breezes and even a couple of busters! Brent and Bruce were tied after seven races and only the last two decided the regatta. There was some excellent midfield sailing with seven skippers covered by just 10 points overall. A fun and friendly day's sailing on a warm and sunny day.

International One Metre (IOM) ClassGMBC International One Metre Sailing Championship Announced
Over the past four years we have grown the SeaWind fleet at GMBC from five boats to 30 and we now have arguably the most exciting and well-attended RC club championship in the country.

We have recently seen similar rapid growth in our International One Meter fleet - from just two boats a year ago to the current 11, with more being added all the time, and with our own club members getting involved in the manufacturing process, new boats, rigs and sails can be made to order in our Club. It's quite possible that we already have one of the biggest IOM fleets in the country and it is time to innovate and give our club members what they want - a local, competitive, exciting and well-run IOM club championship.

It's only natural that once you have tamed a SeaWind, you will look for something faster and more responsive and many of our SW sailors have adapted to IOMs very effectively. Up until now we have had no formal racing to offer our IOM skippers, so we are launching a regatta series which will be run on the same basis as the successful SeaWind one.

On the first Sunday of every month we will have an IOM regatta at Rusty Hook restaurant in Honeydew. It's an accessible venue with great facilities and better quality wind than Emmarentia.

Having a different championship every fortnight will mean that those skippers who have both SeaWinds and IOMs can compete in both series and it will allow our members to sharpen up their racing skills ahead of the IOM National Championships.

Beginners will now be able to start off their RC sailing career with a SeaWind and then move up to an IOM without moving to another club. This will also create a market for used boats as people move between the two series, and for those of us who can't get enough RC sailing, we will now be able to race in two regattas a month. The inaugural round of the GMBC IOM Club Championship will be held on Sunday 2 June 2019 at Rusty Hook.

SeaWind Handicap Regatta
As we know, SeaWinds are not all created equal, and boat weights vary by as much as 350 grams! At Rusty Hook on Sunday 7th April we held a series of races in which we will apply a variety of different handicaps to level the playing field. Get the story and full results here.

2018 GMBC Christmas Regatta
On Sunday 09 December at Emmarentia, GMBC was joined by a number of visitors from other clubs, some from as far afield as Witbank! The fleet of 18 boats included IOMs, SeaWinds, DF95s, Hurricane and an RC Laser. It was a great way to finish off a very successful year before the holiday season kicked in. Get full results here.

Annual General Meeting
Our Annual General Meeting took place at Rusty Hook in Honeydew on 2 December. Congratulations to the many winners of the trophies and prizes! After the formalities and festivities we took to the water for a few hours of fun sailing at a great venue. See pictures from the prize giving here.

GMBC Third Annual Exhibition Day
The third annual Gauteng Model Boat Club took place at the Emmarentia Sailing Club on Sunday, 28th October 2018. After very good coverage in many local and national newspapers, as well as on TV, a large crowd gathered at the water's edge on a glorious, sunny, Highveld summer's day to drool over the immaculate scale models and watch them performing on the water.
